Where to begin?

My name is Ed Salsberry and I wear two hats, so to speak, at the University of Florida. First and foremost, I am the Preventive Maintenance Coordinator for the Physical Plant Department. When I tell people that, most of the time I get the question, "So what do you do?" The best way I can think to explain it is that I schedule all the routine maintenance that gets done in the majority of the buildings on campus, with the exception of Housing and IFAS. Things such as changing air conditioner filters, testing emergency generators, checking exit lights, and testing emergency eye wash stations are just a few. I also maintain and inventory of all of our equipment, which between the main campus and the Health Science Center totals over 8000 items that get checked by our maintenance personnel on a regular basis. For more information on my department, go to http://ppd.ufl.edu/.

Here's a photo from the roof of one of the buildings I am responsible for, which I borrowed from the PPD web site.

I am also a student at the University of Florida, finishing my first year of doctoral studies in the College of Journalism and Communications. My focus is on telecommunications and new media, past, present, and future.

So, the big question I usually get after people find out all this information is, "How do you do it?" Most of the time I just srug my shoulders and answer, "I just do." I should probably also mention that I live in Ocala, which is about 45 miles away from campus, so I have an hour commute each way every day.

So this is a start. As the summer progresses, I'll attempt to lay out my typical schedule during the spring and fall semesters and how I manage to get things done.
